Phil signs with SailGP Canada

Phil Robertson multiple match race world champion, has signed a multi year deal as driver for Canada SailGP Team.

Season 3 of SailGP, the worlds most exciting on water global racing league promises to be even better with confirmation that Phil Robertson, one of the championship’s most popular drivers has been signed up by the Canada SailGP Team for Season 3 and beyond.

“With Jean-Sébastien and Phil onboard, the team has strong leadership on and off the water. It’s one of the first key steps of our multi-year plan which aims to inspire a whole new generation of sailors across the country,” said Fred Pye, Owner of Canada SailGP Team.

Phil brings a wealth of F50 experience with him, as one of only three active foundation drivers from SailGP Season 1 and is looking forward to the challenge of bringing a world-class team of Canadian athletes together to compete at the top end of the worlds toughest sailing league.

“We not only have the ambitious task of building a team from scratch, with little to no experience of this kind in Canada, but we also have the goal to be competitive against the best teams in the world. The first step for us is to build a solid sailing squad, from there we will develop everyone’s knowledge of foiling and then start to work on the specific skills required to sail an F50. Broad sailing experience is key however, there is nothing out there that can truly prepare you to race an F50. So that is what we’ll be focusing on in the coming months. It’s a very exciting project to be part of,” said Phil Robertson, Driver - Canada SailGP Team.

Despite leading Spain SailGP team to an impressive top half finish in Season 2 ahead of some of the world’s best sailors and Phil’s desire to take the team to the next level in Season 3, increased speculation and uncertainty around key personnel, led to the decision to commit to the long term project of Canada SailGP Team and unlocking the huge potential of Canadian sailing, tapping into Canada’s proud tradition of competing and winning on the world stage.

Further announcements will be made soon around the full Canada SailGP Team line-up.
